What Is the Great Commission?

The Great Commission is Jesus' final instruction to his followers in Matthew 28: go and make disciples of all nations. What it means, who it's for, and how ordinary people live it out where they already are.

By Daniel Ziedins

Before Jesus ascended, he gave his followers one last instruction. Christians call it the Great Commission, and every generation of the Church since has been living inside it.

“Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."”

Matthew 28:18–20

What it means, phrase by phrase

  • All authority — the mission rests on Jesus' authority, not ours. We go because he sends.
  • Go — or more literally, "as you are going." It includes crossing oceans, and it includes crossing the street.
  • Make disciples — not just converts. A disciple is someone who learns to follow Jesus in every part of life.
  • Of all nations — every people group. The gospel was never meant to stay inside one culture.
  • Baptizing and teaching — new believers are welcomed into God's family and taught to obey Jesus, not just to know about him.
  • I am with you always — the commission comes with a promise. No one carries it alone.

Who is it for?

It's tempting to treat the Great Commission as a job description for missionaries and pastors. But Jesus gave it to ordinary followers, and Acts 1:8 maps how it spreads: "you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." Start where you are, then go wider.

“How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?”

Romans 10:14

How ordinary people live it out

  • Start with your oikos — the people God has already placed around you. Pray for a few of them by name every day.
  • Be ready to tell your story: what life was like, how you met Jesus, and what has changed.
  • Walk with people, not just at them. Disciple-making is relationship over time.
  • Serve visibly in your arena — work, sport, studio, school — so people see Jesus before they hear about him.
  • Support the wider mission through prayer, giving and going, so the gospel reaches places you can't.

A few free tools in our network were built for exactly this. Oikos Map (oikosmap.com) helps you map and pray for the people around you. Kingdom Base (kingdombase.app) helps you follow up with people you're walking with so no one falls through the cracks. Love on Mission (loveonmission.world) shows the Great Commission across the world and where you fit.

The Great Commission isn't a burden handed to a few heroes. It's an invitation to everyone who follows Jesus — and it comes with his presence. Seek first the Kingdom, then go, as you are going.
